As the sun began to set over the rolling hills of Guanacaste Province, three couples converged on the sandy shores of Playa Conchal for a week of sun-soaked adventure. Nestled in the picturesque Villa Bougainvillea overlooking the lush greens of the local golf course and the azure expanse of the Pacific Ocean, their haven promised a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
Guanacaste, known as the “Golden Coast,” is steeped in history, once home to indigenous tribes like the Chorotegas before Spanish colonization in the 16th century. Today, its rugged coastline and verdant landscapes draw travelers seeking pristine beaches and vibrant biodiversity.
Upon arrival, we wasted no time immersing themselves in the luxurious amenities of the Beach Club. From rejuvenating spa treatments to thrilling paddle boarding excursions, there was something for everyone. The crystalline waters beckoned, offering a refreshing respite 
from the tropical heat, while the poolside loungers provided a tranquil oasis for basking in the warm embrace of the Costa Rican sun.
While the ladies reveled in their leisurely pursuits, the two Bruces seized the opportunity to tee off on the world-class golf course nearby. With its manicured fairways and panoramic vistas, each swing of the club was a testament to the natural beauty that surrounded them.

Diamante Eco Adventure Park
Rising with the dawn, we eagerly embarked on a thrilling journey to the renowned Diamante Eco Adventure Park, a sanctuary of natural wonders nestled within Costa Rica’s vibrant landscapes.
Diamante Eco Adventure Park, situated along the country’s stunning Pacific coast, is a testament to Costa Rica’s commitment to conservation and ecotourism. Originally established as a cattle farm, the park underwent a remarkable transformation into a haven for biodiversity and adventure seekers alike. Today, it stands as a model of sustainable tourism, offering visitors an unparalleled opportunity to connect with the country’s rich natural heritage.
Before setting out on our expedition, we indulged in a delectable breakfast prepared with finesse by our resident sous chef, Bruce (B1) Khan. Energized and ready for adventure, we were greeted by their knowledgeable guide, Jorge, who led us on an immersive journey through the park’s wildlife sanctuary. We saw a dazzling array of Costa Rica’s native fauna, from colorful birds to elusive mammals, each contributing to the rich tapestry of the country’s biodiversity.
After a delightful lunch, we embarked on the highlight of our day: a heart-pounding canopy tour along the Congo Trail. Suspended high above the forest floor, we soared through the verdant canopy, adrenaline coursing through our veins as we took in panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Each zip line offered a thrilling rush of excitement, leaving us a little breathless and totally exhilarated. Riding the Congo Trail
Tio Leo Coffee and Chocolate Tour
The next day we journeyed into the heart of Costa Rica’s rich agricultural traditions, venturing to the Tio Leo Coffee and Chocolate Tour for an immersive exploration of two of the country’s most beloved commodities.
Nestled amidst the verdant hills of Costa Rica’s fertile landscapes, Tio Leo Coffee operation stands as a testament to the country’s long-standing relationship with coffee production. Founded by the visionary Leo, the plantation is renowned for its commitment to quality and sustainability, producing some of the finest coffee beans in the region.
The tour began by delving into the storied history of coffee production in Costa Rica. From the humble beginnings of cultivation to the intricacies of modern-day processing techniques, we gained a newfound appreciation for the artistry behind our morning brew.
We then had a hands-on experience in the art of culinary craftsmanship, as we learned to craft traditional empanadas under the guidance of our knowledgeable hosts. Paired with freshly brewed coffee, our efforts yielded a delectable feast for the senses, igniting our taste buds with flavors both familiar and exotic.
Next on the agenda was an exploration of the world of chocolate, from bean to bar. Roasting the cacao beans over an open flame, we savored the rich aromas wafting through the air before grinding the beans by hand to create a velvety-smooth chocolate elixir. Our hostess pampered us with a luxurious skin rub using the leftover cocoa grounds, leaving our skin tingling with rejuvenation.
Venturing into the lush fields surrounding the plantation, we were led by Leo himself on a botanical journey, discovering the medicinal properties of various plants and sampling their aromatic foliage. Our education continued with a glimpse into the history of sugar production in Costa Rica, culminating in a hands-on demonstration of an old cane press.
Our day drew to a close with a captivating coffee roasting demonstration by Tio Leo himself, as he unveiled the secrets behind achieving the perfect roast. Exhausted yet exhilarated from our immersive experience, we concluded our day with a visit to a local restaurant, indulging in an authentic “rice and beans” meal favored by the locals. Rincon De La Vieja National Park
Amidst the rugged beauty of Costa Rica’s northwest region lies Rincon De La Vieja National Park, a natural wonderland steeped in history and teeming with biodiversity. Established in 1973, this protected area encompasses over 34,000 acres of pristine wilderness, including the imposing Rincon De La Vieja volcano, which lends its name to the park.
Setting out on foot, we embarked on a walking tour of the park’s enchanting thermal pools and cascading waterfalls, immersing ourselves in the splendor of Costa Rica’s natural landscapes. Along the way, we were greeted by a dazzling array of wildlife, from colorful birds flitting among the treetops to slumbering reptiles basking in the sun’s warm embrace.
Our journey led us next to the iconic Oropendola Waterfall, a majestic cascade renowned for its picturesque beauty. Descending a winding trail, we made their way to the base of the falls, where we were rewarded with a great view of the 82 foot high falls and a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters below. Emerging from our aquatic adventure, we were treated to a serendipitous encounter with a spider monkey, whose playful antics provided a captivating spectacle against the backdrop of the verdant canopy above.
Refreshed and invigorated, we made our way to Hacienda Guachipelin, an historic estate nestled amidst the rolling hills of Guanacaste. Here, amidst the tranquil surroundings, we indulged in a sumptuous lunch, accompanied by the cheerful melodies of a local Marimba band, a key instrument in Costa Rican music, that symbolizes the heart and soul of the nation’s cultural expression. Tamarindo
Nestled along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast lies the vibrant surf town of Tamarindo, a haven for adventurers and beach lovers alike. Originally a quiet fishing village, Tamarindo has evolved into a bustling tourist destination, renowned for its pristine beaches, lively atmosphere, and eclectic dining scene.
Founded in the 19th century, Tamarindo’s roots as a fishing village are still evident today, with colorful fishing boats bobbing in the azure waters and fishermen casting their lines from the shore. Over the years, the town has embraced tourism, attracting visitors from around the world with its laid-back charm and unparalleled natural beauty.
On two separate occasions, we ventured into the heart of Tamarindo to soak up the vibrant coastal culture. we wandered through the bustling streets, browsing quaint shops and artisanal boutiques, our senses alive with the sights and sounds of this lively town.
Our culinary adventures led us to La Palapa, a beachfront restaurant renowned for its fresh seafood and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Against the backdrop of a fiery sunset, we indulged in a feast for the senses, savoring the flavors of Costa Rica’s rich culinary heritage.
But it was the nightly fire dancing shows that truly captivated our hearts and minds. Against the backdrop of the starlit sky, skilled performers twirled and danced with flames, casting an enchanting spell over the gathered crowd. Mesmerized by the hypnotic rhythm of the music and the graceful movements of the dancers, we found ourselves swept away by the magic of the moment.
As we bid farewell to Tamarindo for the last time, we carried with us memories of evenings filled with laughter and good food, and the indelible magic of Costa Rica’s coastal culture. Click on thumbnail to view image
