It is hard to believe that another year has passed and it was 54 years ago that our Metallurgical Engineering class graduated from the University if British Columbia. This years mini reunion was held in Osoyoos, BC and was admirably hosted by Bill and Lil Rusch. As the sun dipped below the horizon, our group of eight graduates and their spouses gathered at Campo Marina Italian Restaurant. Nestled in the heart of Osoyoos, this cozy establishment set the perfect stage for a night of reminiscing. The air buzzed with laughter and the clinking of glasses as we savored a delectable dinner.
The next morning, our curiosity led us to the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Center. Against the backdrop of the expansive Okanagan Valley, we immersed ourselves in an informative presentation about the rich indigenous culture that thrives in this arid land. A narrated walking tour unfolded, unveiling the tales of the local people and their connection to the desert. The Spirit Ridge Resort, our oasis for lunch, welcomed us with a feast that celebrated the bounty of the region…including decedent bison burgers.
Post-lunch, we embarked on a journey through some of the most renowned wineries in the area. Each vineyard told a unique story through its vintages, blending the artistry of winemaking with the essence of the Okanagan Valley. As glasses clinked and notes of different varietals danced on our palates, it became apparent that Osoyoos was not only a place on the map but a destination that encapsulated the spirit of conviviality and the art of fine living.
Our final day commenced with a journey into the heart of the Osoyoos Valley—this time to the Osoyoos Desert Center. A walking tour revealed the secrets of the valley’s desert environment, guided by an expert who painted vivid portraits of the local flora and fauna. The landscape unfolded like a living canvas, showcasing the resilience of life in this arid expanse.
Our exploration continued, leading us to more local wineries, each offering a distinct expression of the region’s characteristic tastes and flavors. The day culminated with a final dinner at the picturesque home of Bill and Lil Rusche, perched majestically overlooking Osoyoos Lake. The sunset bathed the landscape in a warm glow, a fitting backdrop for the culmination of our reunion.
As we clinked our glasses one last time, overlooking the sprawling lake and rolling vineyards, we couldn’t help but be grateful for the memories created, the stories shared, and the enduring bonds that had withstood the test of time. Osoyoos had woven its magic into the fabric of our reunion, leaving us with a tapestry of experiences that would forever be etched in our hearts. Until the next rendezvous, we raised our glasses to the 54th Engineering reunion and to those who could not attend—a celebration of friendship, shared history, and the beauty of British Columbia.
