Our day on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad began with anticipation as we prepared to travel from Chama, New Mexico, to Antonito, Colorado. This historic railroad, dating back to the late 19th century, was originally part of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, constructed to connect the isolated mountain communities with the broader rail network. The line weaves through some of the most stunning landscapes in the American Southwest, making it a favorite for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
Our journey began with a breathtaking ascent to Cumbres Pass, which, at 10,015 feet, offered panoramic views of the picturesque Chama Valley. As the train climbed, we marveled at the lush meadows, dense forests, and the occasional deer or elk grazing in the distance. The Parlor car at the back of the train, where we were seated, provided the perfect vantage point to soak in these views. With large open windows, we enjoyed unobstructed vistas of the ever-changing scenery, while savoring snacks and drinks.
One of the highlights of our trip was the descent through a series of switchbacks, a marvel of engineering that allowed the train to navigate the steep terrain safely. This thrilling part of the journey brought us to Osier, a quaint and remote stop where we enjoyed a hearty lunch. The selection was impressive, catering to a wide range of tastes and appetites, ensuring we were well-fueled for the remainder of our adventure.
The Toltec Gorge, with its dramatic cliffs and rugged beauty, was another standout feature. As we passed through the stone tunnel and marveled at the Indian Lava Dome, our hostess provided fascinating background information about the geological and historical significance of these landmarks. Her insights added depth to our appreciation of the landscapes we were traversing. Click on thumbnail to view image
As we approached Antonito, Colorado, the terrain gradually flattened, transitioning to the expansive lava plains. The change in scenery was remarkable, showcasing the incredible diversity of the region. Upon arriving in Antonito, we disembarked and boarded a bus that took us back to Chama, allowing us to reflect on the day’s journey.
