After leaving the charming coastal town of Seward and the beautiful Derby Cove, we set out on a journey across the Kenai Peninsula. Known for its stunning scenery and rich history and fantastic fishing, the Kenai Peninsula is a must-see destination for any travelers visiting Alaska.
As we made our way across the peninsula, we were struck by the natural beauty of the area. From the snow-capped Kenai Mountain Range to the sparkling waters of the Kenai River, the landscape was truly breathtaking. We also learned a little about the area’s history, including the Dena’ina Athabascans, a Native Alaskan people who have called the Kenai Peninsula home for thousands of years.
Our final destination for the day was Soldotna, a small city located on the Kenai River. Known for its fishing, hunting, and outdoor activities, Soldotna is a popular destination for tourists. We set up camp at the Diamond M RV Park. That evening, we enjoyed a delicious group dinner prepared by the camp hostess. The food was delicious and the company was great, making for a truly memorable experience. After dinner, we headed back to the Alaska Horn and Antler, a local shop that specializes in carvings made from bone and other natural materials. The shop was famous for their unique and beautiful creations, and it was a pleasure to see the artisans at work.
Fly Fishing on the Upper Kenai River
The next day was dedicated to fly fishing on the Upper Kenai River. We booked a private trip with Alaska River Adventures, based out of Cooper Landing, and our guide, Jeremy, was an experienced angler who knew the river like the back of his hand.
Jeremy was a great guide, not only was he experienced and knowledgeable, but he was also patient with us as we learned the ins and outs of fly fishing. We caught a lot of Dolly Varden Trout, a type of char found in the river and it was a great experience for all of us.
Although it was too early for the big salmon run, we were still able to catch a few fish and had a great time and as an added bonus we saw a grizzly and a beautiful eagle as we cruised down river. Jeremy shared his knowledge of the river and the fish, and we were able to learn a lot about the sport. Click on thumbnail to view image
At the end of the day, we were tired but happy and content with our catch. It was an unforgettable experience, and we were grateful for the opportunity to explore the Upper Kenai River.
